Cut Carbon Champion - Star Rating

Star Rating & Achievement Awards

Each product is assigned a star rating for easy identification of how well it performs, compared to the average embodied carbon in its Product Category.

Gaining a high star rating is desirable, as it represents carbon emission reduction performance in comparison to other products in the market place.  International and Australian research demonstrates concerns about climate change across all demographic sectors and a desire to embrace positive action.

Each Cut Carbon Champion Certificate is assigned to a Product Category Rating (PCR), as per its Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Therefore individual brands compete on embodied carbon on a comparable basis.

Where Carbon Neutral products in one category compete, the Category Winner is based on the lowest use of carbon off-sets.

  • The Cut Carbon Champion Star Rating scheme is based on improvement in carbon emission reduction when compared against the product category average for embedded carbon.

  • Cut Carbon Champion uses a market average mean (i.e. 50%).  Star ratings are assigned to one of 6 separate performance levels, ranging from market average to market best.

  • Note: Only one product will be awarded the title of Category Winner for achieving the highest performance in that product category.

Technical Committee awards star rating

The Technical Committee is the core body which sets the selection criteria based on the overall embodied carbon level.  Where possible, the star ranking of a product is compared to Global Market average Embodied Carbon for that PCR.  Where a Global Market average is not available the Technical Committee will establish an alternative, including the following approaches.

Note: Based on the national and global evolution of carbon emission measurements, Cut Carbon Champion will apply an appropriate base line emission comparison, best suited to the product category being considered.  This will be at the technical discretion Cut Carbon Champion and its Technical Committee.
